Arrival Day One Boracay (17APRIL2012)

Arrived yesterday evening at Boracay Regency at 6 pm in the evening.  Started from Barrio Barretto, Zambales at 7 am.  Took van via Subic Bay Free Port, then north on Subic, Clark, Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), then south on North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) to Manila.  Traffic was slow into Manila, and backed-up along Roxas Blvd to airport.  Arrived airport about 1030 AM.  Check-in at domestic airport was easy.  Flight on Philippine Airlines delayed 15 minutes, departed at 1345 PM.  Flight time was 50 minutes.  Waited 15 minutes for bags, had to check one extra  bag in Manila, was not allowed to hand carry snorkeling fins and camera tripod on flight.  Will have to pick-up an extra bag in Boracay.   90 minute bus ride from Kalibo to Caticlan, then 3 minute van ride to Boracay Regency boat area.  Transported to Boracay via high-speed boat; took less than 5 minutes.  Then 10 minute van ride to hotel.  After arriving to Boracay Regency looked for a place to eat.  Ate at Bug’s Grill for 380 peso per person, was ok, not great.  A couple of drinks at Coco Bar, part of Red Coconut hotel.  Then to bed for the night.

This gallery contains 1 photo.

Taken on 12 April 2012 in the morning.  There is a small parking area just off the road.  Walk down the steps, then up the steps to the lighthouse, you can see the entire bay from the lighthouse.

Day Three of Trip

Trying to adjust to the weather.   Really hot and humid this time of year.   I have gone to the free port (Old Navy Base) twice the last two days.  Completed a morning jog both days.  Yesterday took a drive over to the  golf course, now called Subic Leisure Golf and Country Club.  The course is nine holes, was 18 holes years ago.  After the Navy departed in the early nineties understand the course was private then closed for a few years.   The costs are $28.00 weekdays and $35 on the weekends.  Costs cover 9 and 18 holes, same price.  Club rentals are $23.00.   May try a round next week.  Many new buildings and construction in the free port area.  In addition to Boracay next week, may go to Iba for the annual mango festival.   Dates are 20 April to 22 April.

Arrival in Philippines (11APRIL2012)

SCTEX ROAD HEADING SOUTH TOWARDS SUBIC. LOOKS REALLY NICE AFTER A GOOD RAIN.

Long day yesterday and today.   Started in a van from Chula Vista, CA  at 14:30 PM; van made three stops to pickup more passengers  before departing to LAX.  Arrived at LAX at 1815 PM, then in line for 45 minutes waiting to check-in.  Flight departed at 1035 PM, then stopover in Guam to refuel and clean facilities, if you catch my drift (hold your nose).   Much needed cleaning after 12 hours of flight time with over 400 people on board.  Delay in Guam was to be 45 minutes, finally departed after 90 minutes.  Who knows why, but it was a stop in Guam!  Then 3 hours and 10 minutes from Guam to Manila.   From LAX to Guam hit two areas of turbulence,  second area was bad, 747 was getting moved up and down like a kite in typhoon.  Arrival at Manila was ok, took over one hour to get luggage, this is normal, carousals are not very large.   After 30 years of travel to Manila Airport, I could not expect a quicker process.  Van was waiting with seven of my wife’s relatives.  Traffic slow out of Manila, we increased speed once on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX).  After NLE north for 45 minutes, then cut across to Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), then South to Subic Bay free-port for 51 Kilometers.  Out the back gate of free port to Barrio Barretto (5 minutes), turn left, then head north 3K, then turn right at the Coffee Shop, follow the road until the T-Intersection, then make a left, then up the hill on Rizal Extension to home ( 1K).  Coffee Shop is a landmark, everyone knows the place in Olongapo City.  They have really great tacos.
